Later, the Maharani (queen) wanted to settle the problem by mutual talks. She wanted to discuss the problem with me. But the Diwan of the state, who was a Brahmin stood in the way of our talks and said that the Maharani should not talk to me directly. So he wrote a letter to Rajagopalachari. Rajaji knew that I would carry the laurels and earn the credit. So he cunningly decided to make the Maharani talk to Gandhi. It is because of this trick played by Rajaji, that Gandhi's name was dragged in the history of Vaikom agitation. I did not much mind as to who personally gained the name and fame. I was not for any personal glorification. I only wanted the problem to be solved successfully.
Gandhi came and had talks with the Maharani. Maharani consented to throw open all the roads for the low caste sudras and Untouchables. But she expressed the fear that I would further continue the struggle seeking the right for Untouchables to enter the temple. Gandhi came to the Travellers Bungalow, where I was staying and asked me to express my opinion. I said "it is not a big thing to enable the Untouchables make use of the public roads. Even though temple entry is not at present one of the ideals of Congress, so far as I am concerned it is one of my main ideals. But you may inform the Maharani that for the present I have no such idea to launch a campaign for temple entry rights. Let things come to normal before I decide what to do".
Gandhi informed the Rani and she proclaimed the right for all to make use of all the roads around the temple. This is how the low caste sudras and Untouchables got the right to use all roads, like the highest caste Brahmins and orthodox Hindus.
I was for some time the chairman of the Devasthana committee at Erode. When I was away, comrade S. Gurusamy and Ponnambalan and Eswran induced two Adi-Dravida workers in my office, to wear the sacred ashes (viboothi) on their foreheads and took them inside the temple. Seeing them, the Brahmins cried loudly that they had polluted the deity. They were locked up inside and a case was instituted. They were punished in the district court. But on hearing the appeal, the High Court released them as not guilty. That was during the British rule.
But, it was only at Suchindrum that the first agitation for temple entry was launched publicly. A Self-Respect Conference was also conducted under my presidentship. A number of resolutions were passed urging the abolition of castes and ensuring rights for the Untouchables to enter the temples.
Next, another conference was held at Ernakulam. In that Conference a resolution was passed condemning castes and urging Hindus to become Muslims, as there are no castes in Islam. Some others recommended Christianity through amendments. At last, the option was given to join any one of the above two religions.
One day, in Allepey one of the converts to Islam (who was a Pulayar by caste) went to purchase an article at a Nair shop. He was beaten up and it developed into a serious clash between Hindus and Muslims. Such clashes between Hindus and Muslims spread everywhere. The then Dewan, a Brahmin, Sir C.P. Ramasamy Iyer, put down the agitation with an iron hand. But the Rajah (king) was later informed that most of the low caste Untouchables like Ezhawas and Pulayars are becoming Muslims. He was also advised that there was no other go than to throw open all the temples for all untouchables to save Hinduism from the peril. (To be continued)

He was a student of our friend, famous Hindi poet, Biren Dangwal. I am stunned to hear the news as we worked together for a while and had very cordial relations, though recently we could not interact!
The passing away of legendary singer Suchitra Mitra in the 150th birth anniversary year of Rabindranath Tagore marks the end of an era in Rabindra Sangeet.
Mitra was one of the brightest stars in Rabindra Sangeet along with singers like Hemanta Mukhopadhayay, Kanika Bandopadhyay, Debabrata Biswas and Dwijen Mukhopadhayay.

Mitra was awarded the Padmashree in 1974, besides 'Desikottama' from her alma mater Visva Bharati, the HMV Golden Disc Award and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986.
The influence of her father Sourindra Mohan Mukhopadhyay and her mother, both avid lovers of Rabindra Sangeet, left an indelible impression on Mitra's life.
Born in 1921 in a moving train at Gujhandi, she often joked that she was born to travel relentlessly. Mitra visited USA, the UK, Hungary, Poland, erstwhile Soviet Russia, East Germany and Czechkoslavia to participate in numerous festivals on Rabindra Sangeet.
She received early lessons in music from Pankaj Kumar Mullick and was exposed to influences of cinema from an early age as luminaries of Bengali cinema like Pramathesh Barua, Debaki Basu and Sisir Kumar Bhaduri were regular visitors at her father's home.
Mitra joined Sangeet Bhavan at Viswa Bharati with a scholarship just 20 days after the demise of Gurudev in 1941, a fact that she rued many times.
She was under the tutelege of the bard's disciples Indiradebi Chaudharani, Shantidev Ghosh and Shailajaranjan Mazumdar.
Her first record appeared when she was only 24 in 1945. She set up 'Rabitirtha', an academy for teaching Rabindra Sangeet which has created a large number of talented singers.
Later, Mitra became an active member of the Indian Peoples Theatre (IPTA) as she believed that every human was a political being and music had the power to reach a message of unity and peace to the people. She toured various parts of rural Bengal with Hemanta Mukhopadhayay and Debabrata Biswas.
"But I don't belong to any party," she had said in an interview.
Mitra taught Rabindra Sangeet at the Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata and opened a department for it, which she headed till 1984.
A purist, she took upon herself the task of spreading Rabindra Sangeet and resisted any attempt at distortions of notations and words of the bard's original works.
She has to her credit innumerable records of Rabindra Sangeet, besides songs of Atul Prasad Sen and Dwijendralal Roy and some modern songs.
She also acted in Rituparno Ghosh's National award winning film Dahan. Her other interests included painting and the performing arts. She produced Rabindra Nritya Natyas (dance dramas) and took part in many of them.
Suchitra, who has to her credit many books and essays on the grammar and techniques of Rabindra Sangeet and Gurudev's aesthetics had recently directed her efforts towards compiling an encyclopedia of Tagore's songs for students and researchers.
She had also served as the erstwhile sheriff of Kolkata in 2001.

He was 55. He leaves behind his wife Snehlata, son Tanmay and daughter Aditi. His body was to be cremated later today at Noida.
Mr Maheshwari was associated for 37 years with the media industry. A post graduate in political science, Maheshwari was instrumental in taking the Hindinewspaper Amar Ujala to new heights.
He got early training in the industry under his father and co-founder of Amar Ujala, the late Muralilal Maheshwari in Bareily. He moved to Meerut in 1986 for establishing the newspaper's edition there. He also expanded Amar Ujala to Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Delhi besides starting half a dozen editions in Uttar Pradesh.
He was also associated with several organisations related to the media industry and was a keen watcher of the global media industry.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said Mr Maheshwari's untimely death had left a void in Hindi journalism which would be difficult to fill.
She said Mr Maheshwari, through his innovative spirit and entrepreneurial skills, was able to enhance the reach of the group to the common man.
"His contribution in increasing the number of editions to over 18 editions across six states shall always be remembered as a landmark achievement," she said.
"It was through his dynamic leadership that Amar Ujala scaled new heights as far as reach, readership profile and content were concerned," Ms Soni added.

Modern writers have expressed views which deny any spiritual value to the Vedas. As an illustration one may refer to the views of Prof. Muir. According to Prof. Muir:
"The whole character of these compositions and the circumstances under which, from internal evidence, they appear to have arisen, are in harmony with the supposition that they were nothing more than the natural expression of the personal hopes and feelings of those ancient bards of whom they were first recited. In these songs the Aryan sages celebrated the praises of their ancestral gods (while at the same time they sought to conciliate their goodwill by a variety of oblations supposed to be acceptable to them) and besought of them all the blessings which men in general desired — health, wealth, long life, cattle, offspring, victory over their enemies, forgiveness of sin, and in some cases also celestial felicity".
It would no doubt be objected that all foreign scholars are prejudiced and that their views cannot therefore be accepted. Fortunately we are not altogether dependent upon the views of foreigners. There are leaders of indigenous schools of thought which have taken the same view. The most notorious example is that of the Charvakas.
The opposition of Charvaka can be seen from the following quotation which reproduces his line of argument against the Vaidikas:
"If you object that, if there be no such thing as happiness in a future world, then how should men of experienced wisdom engage in the agnihotra and other sacrifices, which can only be performed with great expenditure of money and bodily fatigue. Your objection cannot be accepted as any proof to the contrary, since the agnihotra, etc. are only useful as means of livelihood, for the Veda is tainted by three faults of untruth, self-contradiction and tantology, then again the impostors who call themselves Vaidic pundits are mutually destructive, as the author of the Jnan-Kanda is overthrown by those who maintain the authority of the Karma-Kanda and those who maintain the authority of the Jnan-Kanda reject that of the Karma-Kanda; and lastly the three Vedas themselves are only the incoherent rhapsodies of knaves and to this effect runs the popular saying: (to be continued)

Dalit, OBCs embrace Islam to escape Hindu racism
They spent money and performed this pooja. I heard abut this in prison. All of a sudden, one night I heard the sound of gunshots. I enquired the warden, whether there was any festival going on near the prison. He told me that the Raja passed away and the gun shots are fired to indicate the loss. When I learnt that the Rajah dead I had a melancholic feeling. Later I was glad, because the prayers by the Brahmins and orthodox Hindus to destroy their enemy had resulted in the death of the Maharaja. Their prayers did not harm the Vaikom agitators. The people were also happy. Subsequently we were all released on the ceremony day of Maharaja. Our enemies also lost their tone and tenor.Later, the Maharani (queen) wanted to settle the problem by mutual talks. She wanted to discuss the problem with me. But the Diwan of the state, who was a Brahmin stood in the way of our talks and said that the Maharani should not talk to me directly. So he wrote a letter to Rajagopalachari. Rajaji knew that I would carry the laurels and earn the credit. So he cunningly decided to make the Maharani talk to Gandhi. It is because of this trick played by Rajaji, that Gandhi's name was dragged in the history of Vaikom agitation. I did not much mind as to who personally gained the name and fame. I was not for any personal glorification. I only wanted the problem to be solved successfully.
Gandhi came and had talks with the Maharani. Maharani consented to throw open all the roads for the low caste sudras and Untouchables. But she expressed the fear that I would further continue the struggle seeking the right for Untouchables to enter the temple. Gandhi came to the Travellers Bungalow, where I was staying and asked me to express my opinion. I said "it is not a big thing to enable the Untouchables make use of the public roads. Even though temple entry is not at present one of the ideals of Congress, so far as I am concerned it is one of my main ideals. But you may inform the Maharani that for the present I have no such idea to launch a campaign for temple entry rights. Let things come to normal before I decide what to do".
Gandhi informed the Rani and she proclaimed the right for all to make use of all the roads around the temple. This is how the low caste sudras and Untouchables got the right to use all roads, like the highest caste Brahmins and orthodox Hindus.
I was for some time the chairman of the Devasthana committee at Erode. When I was away, comrade S. Gurusamy and Ponnambalan and Eswran induced two Adi-Dravida workers in my office, to wear the sacred ashes (viboothi) on their foreheads and took them inside the temple. Seeing them, the Brahmins cried loudly that they had polluted the deity. They were locked up inside and a case was instituted. They were punished in the district court. But on hearing the appeal, the High Court released them as not guilty. That was during the British rule.
But, it was only at Suchindrum that the first agitation for temple entry was launched publicly. A Self-Respect Conference was also conducted under my presidentship. A number of resolutions were passed urging the abolition of castes and ensuring rights for the Untouchables to enter the temples.
Next, another conference was held at Ernakulam. In that Conference a resolution was passed condemning castes and urging Hindus to become Muslims, as there are no castes in Islam. Some others recommended Christianity through amendments. At last, the option was given to join any one of the above two religions.
One day, in Allepey one of the converts to Islam (who was a Pulayar by caste) went to purchase an article at a Nair shop. He was beaten up and it developed into a serious clash between Hindus and Muslims. Such clashes between Hindus and Muslims spread everywhere. The then Dewan, a Brahmin, Sir C.P. Ramasamy Iyer, put down the agitation with an iron hand. But the Rajah (king) was later informed that most of the low caste Untouchables like Ezhawas and Pulayars are becoming Muslims. He was also advised that there was no other go than to throw open all the temples for all untouchables to save Hinduism from the peril. (To be continued)

Secondly, assuming god had a body, god could not perceive things which are beyond the reach of the senses while the Vedas contain things beyond the reach of human senses.Thirdly, the connection between a word and its meaning is eternal.

What can one say of these premises? Can there be anything more absurd? Who can accept that the Vedas contain something not comprehensible by human senses? Who can accept that there is an eternal connection between a word and its meaning? Who can accept that sound is not created not manifested but is eternal?
Having regard to these absurd premises one is led to ask why did the Brahmins make such a desperate attempt for establishing a desperate conclusion? What did they want to gain thereby? Was it because the Vedas had been made the exponent of the Chaturvarna with the Brahmins as the lord of all.
Legendary Rabindra Sangeet Singer, a disciple of the Nobel Laureate poet, Suchitra Mitra died today in Kolkata this afternon. The passing away of legendary singer Suchitra Mitra in the 150th birth anniversary year of Rabindranath Tagore marks the end of an era in Rabindra Sangeet.

Her powerful rendition of Shonar Bangla Ami Tomai Bhalobashi, which became the national anthem of Bangladesh, inspired freedom fighters during the Liberation War in 1971. The number remains one of her most popular songs along withKrishankoli Ami Tareyi Boli, Tobu Mone Rekho and Ekla Chalo Re.
Mitra was awarded the Padmashree in 1974, besides 'Desikottama' from her alma mater Visva Bharati, the HMV Golden Disc Award and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986.
The influence of her father Sourindra Mohan Mukhopadhyay and her mother, both avid lovers of Rabindra Sangeet, left an indelible impression on Mitra's life.
Born in 1921 in a moving train at Gujhandi, she often joked that she was born to travel relentlessly. Mitra visited USA, the UK, Hungary, Poland, erstwhile Soviet Russia, East Germany and Czechkoslavia to participate in numerous festivals on Rabindra Sangeet.
She received early lessons in music from Pankaj Kumar Mullick and was exposed to influences of cinema from an early age as luminaries of Bengali cinema like Pramathesh Barua, Debaki Basu and Sisir Kumar Bhaduri were regular visitors at her father's home.
Mitra joined Sangeet Bhavan at Viswa Bharati with a scholarship just 20 days after the demise of Gurudev in 1941, a fact that she rued many times.
She was under the tutelege of the bard's disciples Indiradebi Chaudharani, Shantidev Ghosh and Shailajaranjan Mazumdar.
Her first record appeared when she was only 24 in 1945. She set up 'Rabitirtha', an academy for teaching Rabindra Sangeet which has created a large number of talented singers.
Later, Mitra became an active member of the Indian Peoples Theatre (IPTA) as she believed that every human was a political being and music had the power to reach a message of unity and peace to the people. She toured various parts of rural Bengal with Hemanta Mukhopadhayay and Debabrata Biswas.
"But I don't belong to any party," she had said in an interview.
Mitra taught Rabindra Sangeet at the Rabindra Bharati University in Kolkata and opened a department for it, which she headed till 1984.
A purist, she took upon herself the task of spreading Rabindra Sangeet and resisted any attempt at distortions of notations and words of the bard's original works.
She has to her credit innumerable records of Rabindra Sangeet, besides songs of Atul Prasad Sen and Dwijendralal Roy and some modern songs.
She also acted in Rituparno Ghosh's National award winning film Dahan. Her other interests included painting and the performing arts. She produced Rabindra Nritya Natyas (dance dramas) and took part in many of them.
Suchitra, who has to her credit many books and essays on the grammar and techniques of Rabindra Sangeet and Gurudev's aesthetics had recently directed her efforts towards compiling an encyclopedia of Tagore's songs for students and researchers.
She had also served as the erstwhile sheriff of Kolkata in 2001.

Mr Atul Maheshwari, Managing Director of the Amar Ujala group of publications, died at a Gurgaon hospitalthis morning after a brief illness.He was 55. He leaves behind his wife Snehlata, son Tanmay and daughter Aditi. His body was to be cremated later today at Noida.
Mr Maheshwari was associated for 37 years with the media industry. A post graduate in political science, Maheshwari was instrumental in taking the Hindinewspaper Amar Ujala to new heights.
He got early training in the industry under his father and co-founder of Amar Ujala, the late Muralilal Maheshwari in Bareily. He moved to Meerut in 1986 for establishing the newspaper's edition there. He also expanded Amar Ujala to Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Delhi besides starting half a dozen editions in Uttar Pradesh.
He was also associated with several organisations related to the media industry and was a keen watcher of the global media industry.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni said Mr Maheshwari's untimely death had left a void in Hindi journalism which would be difficult to fill.
She said Mr Maheshwari, through his innovative spirit and entrepreneurial skills, was able to enhance the reach of the group to the common man.
"His contribution in increasing the number of editions to over 18 editions across six states shall always be remembered as a landmark achievement," she said.
"It was through his dynamic leadership that Amar Ujala scaled new heights as far as reach, readership profile and content were concerned," Ms Soni added.

THE CONTENTS OF THE VEDAS : HAVE THEY ANY MORAL OR SPIRITUAL VALUE ?1
If the Vedas are to be accepted as binding and infallible then what they teach must have ethical and spiritual value. Nobody can regard a rag to be binding and infallible because a philosopher like Jaimini came forward to lend his authority to such a proposal. Have the Vedas any ethical or spiritual value? Every Hindu who regards the Vedas are infallible is bound to consider this question.Modern writers have expressed views which deny any spiritual value to the Vedas. As an illustration one may refer to the views of Prof. Muir. According to Prof. Muir:
"The whole character of these compositions and the circumstances under which, from internal evidence, they appear to have arisen, are in harmony with the supposition that they were nothing more than the natural expression of the personal hopes and feelings of those ancient bards of whom they were first recited. In these songs the Aryan sages celebrated the praises of their ancestral gods (while at the same time they sought to conciliate their goodwill by a variety of oblations supposed to be acceptable to them) and besought of them all the blessings which men in general desired — health, wealth, long life, cattle, offspring, victory over their enemies, forgiveness of sin, and in some cases also celestial felicity".
It would no doubt be objected that all foreign scholars are prejudiced and that their views cannot therefore be accepted. Fortunately we are not altogether dependent upon the views of foreigners. There are leaders of indigenous schools of thought which have taken the same view. The most notorious example is that of the Charvakas.
The opposition of Charvaka can be seen from the following quotation which reproduces his line of argument against the Vaidikas:
"If you object that, if there be no such thing as happiness in a future world, then how should men of experienced wisdom engage in the agnihotra and other sacrifices, which can only be performed with great expenditure of money and bodily fatigue. Your objection cannot be accepted as any proof to the contrary, since the agnihotra, etc. are only useful as means of livelihood, for the Veda is tainted by three faults of untruth, self-contradiction and tantology, then again the impostors who call themselves Vaidic pundits are mutually destructive, as the author of the Jnan-Kanda is overthrown by those who maintain the authority of the Karma-Kanda and those who maintain the authority of the Jnan-Kanda reject that of the Karma-Kanda; and lastly the three Vedas themselves are only the incoherent rhapsodies of knaves and to this effect runs the popular saying: (to be continued)

The accession of state of Jammu and Kashmir to India shall be decided through the democratic method of a free and impartial plebiscite under the auspices of the United Nations...."(11) The Amrit Bazar Patrika, Calcutta (Jan.2, 1951) said: ".... we would ultimately abide by the verdict of their plebiscite. If they tell us to walk out, I would have no hesitation in quitting..".(12) In a statement in the Indian Parliament on Aug.7, 1952, Nehru said: "...future of Kashmir is going to be decided finally by the goodwill and pleasure of her people... This Parliament does not have the strength to decide the question of Kashmir.... If, however, the people of Kashmir do not wish to remain with us, let them go by all means. We will not keep them against their will....".(13) In his statement in the Lok Sabha on March 31, 1955 (Hindustan Times), New Delhi on April 1, 1955: "... Rabindra Sangeet (Bengali: রবীন্দ্রসঙ্গীত, pronounced Robindro-Shongit, [ɾobind̪ɾɔ soŋɡit̪]), also known as Tagore Songs in English, is a form of music composed by Rabindranath Tagore who added a new dimension to the musical concept of India in general and Bengal in specific.[1]
Rabindra Sangeet use Indian classical music and traditional folk music as sources.[2] Tagore wrote some 2,230 songs.

Rabindra Sangeet has had a very strong influence on Bengali culture.[2] These songs are regarded as cultural treasures of Bengal in bothBangladesh and West Bengal (India).
The Rabindrasangeet, which deal with varied themes are immensely popular and form a foundation for the Bengali ethos that is comparable to, perhaps even greater than, that which Shakespeare has on the English-speaking world. It is said that his songs are the outcome of 500 years of literary & cultural churning that the Bengali community has gone through.
In his book Caste and Outcaste, Dhan Gopal Mukerji has said that these songs transcend the mundane to the aesthetic and express all ranges and categories of human emotion. The poet had given a voice to all—big or small, rich or poor. The poorest boatman on the Gangesas well as the rich landlord find expression for their emotional trials and tribulations in Tagore's songs.
Rabindrasangeet has evolved into a distinctive school of music. Practitioners of this genre are known to be fiercely protective of tradionalist practice. Novel interpretations and variations have drawn severe censure in both West Bengal and Bangladesh. And like Beethoven's symphonies or Vilayat Khan's sitar, Rabindrasangeet demands an educated, intelligent & cultured audience to appreciate the lyrical beauty of his compositions.
He was among the first to recognize that cinema should have its own language. In 1929 he wrote, "The beauty and grandeur of this form in motion has to be developed in such a way that it becomes self-sufficient without the use of words." The inherent beauty & depth of Tagore's songs have persuaded a number of filmmakers to use Tagore's songs in their films including Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, Nitin Bose, Tapan Sinha and Kumar Shahani.His songs were also used in British, European & Australian movies just to capture the mood of a cinematic situation & to reveal a delicate interplay of relationships.
Ritwik Ghatak said of Tagore, "That man has culled all my feelings from long before my birth…I read him and find that...I have nothing new to say." In his Meghe Dhaka Tara (The Cloud-capped Star) and Subarnarekha, Ghatak uses Rabindrasangeet to express the poignancy of post-Partition Bengal.
Two of the songs written by Tagore are the national anthems of India and Bangladesh. These are:

Tagore died in 1941, but his sublimity and effect of his songs are eternal. In his songs, pure poetry has integrated the creator, nature and love. Human love (Prem) transforms into love and devotion for the creator (Bhakti). The collection of his 2000 odd songs is known as Gitabitan (garden of songs). The four major parts of this book are Puja (worship), Prem (love), Prakriti (Nature) and Bichitra (Diverse). However, the categorizations melt away in many songs. A song about rains may reveal longing for the lover. A love song may turn out to be love of the creator. Here are first two lines of one song:
দাঁড়িয়ে আছ তুমি আমার গানের ওপারে আমার সুরগুলি পায় চরণ আমি পাইনে তোমারে
You are standing beyond my song. My melody reaches your feet, but I cannot reach you. (The above translation requires editing. The two lines mean: You are standing beyond my song. My tunes find the words but I cannot reach you.)

- Kanika Bandyopadhyay: her original name was "Anima" but Tagore had renamed her "Kanika" and Abanindranath Tagore used to call herMohar by which name she is known to many of her dedicated listeners.
- Debabrata Biswas: also known as the Second Man of Rabindrasangeet and the most popular male voice.
- Suman Chatterjee
- Swagatalakshmi Dasgupta
- Banani Ghosh
- Santidev Ghosh: direct disciple of Rabindranath Tagore and Dinendranath Tagore.
- Kishore Kumar
- Suchitra Mitra: like Kanika Bandyopadhyay, Suchitra is another female pioneer and virtuoso of Rabindra Sangeet. Many of the contemporary singers are disciples of Suchitra and Kanika.
- Hemanta Kumar Mukhopadhyay: although he sang Bengali contemporary and Hindi songs also, Rabindrasangeet was his passion. He was among those who were instrumental in making Rabindrasangeet popular across all strata of Bengali population.
- Pankaj Mullick: also known as the First Man of Rabindrasangeet.

- Nilima Sen: she was the Principal of Sangeet Bhavan and Swastika Mukhopadhyay was her student,who now teaches Rabindra Sangeet there.
