The "Asia to Gaza Solidarity Caravan" was stuck in Syria for a week before Egyptian authorities allowed it to enter its soil.
Asia's first humanitarian aid convoy bound for the besieged Gaza Strip is finally set to enter Egypt, after nearly a week of being denied admission.
The "Asia to Gaza Solidarity Caravan" was stuck in Latikia, Syria for a week before Egyptian authorities allowed it to pass through the al-Arish port.
A number of Iranian and Jordanian activists, however, were denied entry.
Palestinian authorities said Cairo also refused to let in 10 power generators donated by Iran.
The convoy also known as Asia 1, consists of activists from more than 15 countries, including Iran, India, Japan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia, New Zealand and Kuwait.
It was scheduled to reach Gaza by December 27, in time for the second anniversary of Israel's 22-day war on the Strip that started on December 28, 2008.
The convoy is the first of its kind heading to the blockaded coastal sliver to show solidarity with thePalestinian people in their resistance against Israel.
On May 31, nine Turkish activists aboard the Gaza Freedom Flotilla were killed when Israeli marines opened fire on them in international waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
Tel Aviv laid an economic siege on the Gaza Strip in June 2007 after the democratically-elected government of Hamas took control of the coastal sliver.
The illegal Israeli-imposed blockade has had a disastrous impact on the humanitarian and economic situation in the enclave.
Some 1.5 million people are being denied their basic rights, including freedom of movement, and their rights to appropriate living conditions, work, health and education.
To make matters worse, at the turn of 2009, the Israeli military launched a deadly assault on Gaza, killing at least 1,400 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
Half of Gaza's infrastructure was destroyed and remains unrepaired as a result of Israel's siege, which includes a ban on the entry of building materials into the coastal sliver.
'Viva Palestina' aid flotilla set to depart for Gaza
Egypt announces it will allow aid convoy to dock at Al-Arish seaport on route to Gaza, will deny George Galloway entry into country.
A flotilla of ships titled the "Viva Palestina" convoy, hailed by organizers as the largest convoy to break the Gaza embargo, is set to depart this weekend, organizers announced Thursday.
The flotilla has been cleared to sail from Syria to the Egyptian port of Al-Arish, from where it will make its way into Gaza.
The Egyptian government announced that it will allow the aid convoy to dock at Al-Arish seaport while en route to Gaza.
Hussam Zaki of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirmed that the convoy will be allowed access to Gaza however he insisted George Galloway, the British ex-parliamentarian leading the convoy, will not be allowed in the country and will remain as persona non grata.
The main ship, carrying 380 activists from 42 countries, 147 vehicles and $5 million in medical aid departed from London September 18 and has been held at the Syrian port of Latakia for the past 10 days.
Some of the passengers on board the flotilla include 40 people that were also onboard the Mavi Mamara aid ship which was involved in an IDF interception on May 31.

Israel tells UN it will stop Gaza aid flotilla
Israel informed the United Nations Friday that it reserves the right to use force to stop a new aid flotilla from reaching the blockaded Gaza Strip.
In a letter sent to UN chief Ban Ki-moon, Israel's UN Ambassador Gabriela Shalev said the stated intention of the Bolivian-flagged all-women cargo ship Mariam "is to violate the existing naval blockade of Gaza."
She added that Israel also had information that another vessel, the Naji al-Ali, plans to leave from a Lebanese port with the aim of violating the blockade.
"Israel reserves its right under international law to use all necessary means to prevent these ships from violating the aforementioned naval blockade," Shalev warned.
She said such "confrontational actions by the organizers as well as those that offer their consent, is deeply troubling and requires the attention of the international community."
"Israel came under international censure over its May 31 seizure of a six-ship aid fleet bound for the Palestinian territory when Israeli commandos shot dead nine Turkish activists in a clash on the lead boat.
The Mariam, a Bolivian-flagged cargo ship originally named Junia Star, plans to leave from northern Lebanon for Cyprus on Sunday at 10:00 pm (1900 GMT) on the first leg of a planned voyage to Gaza, organizer Samar al-Hajj said Thursday.
The vessel, renamed in honor of the Virgin Mary, plans to carry aid to Gaza in a bid to break the four-year siege of the Strip with more than 50 Lebanese and foreign women activists on board, including local pop star May Hariri.
The Naji al-Ali, another Lebanese boat organised by journalists, has also announced it would sail to Gaza via Cyprus but has not yet received clearance from Lebanese authorities.
