Privilege Notices in Parliament Against Bedi, Om Puri

Privilege Notices in Parliament Against Bedi, Om Puri
Members in both Houses of Parliament have given Privilege notices against actor Om Puri and civil rights activist Kiran Bedi for using "derogatory and defamatory" language against politicians and the matter is under consideration of the Chair.

In the Rajya Sabha, a member also attacked lawyer activist Prashant Bhushan for reportedly saying that legislations are passed by Parliament after taking bribe.

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar today said in the House that notices for moving a Privilege Motion against Puri and Bedi for "allegedly" using "derogatory and defamatory" language against politicians have been received.

Kumar said she had received notices from P L Punia, Jagadambika Pal, Ramashankar Rajbhar, Lalchand Kataria, Mirza Aslam Beg, Praveen Aron and Shailendra Kumar.

"The matter is under my consideration," Kumar said.

During Anna Hazare's agitation at Ramlila grounds on the Lokpal issue, Puri and Bedi had allegedly targeted politicians and used derogatory and defamatory language against them.

In the Rajya Sabha, Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan told agitated members that the privilege notices given by Ramgopal Yadav (SP) and Md Adeeb (Ind) were under consideration of the Chairman.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Upper House, Yadav said that the film actor dubbed Parliamentarians as "thieves" and "incompetent" while speaking from the stage of Hazare on August 26.

He said such statements by the actor is a privilege of MPs and requested the Chair to refer his notice to the Privilege Committee amid thumping of desks by members from all parties.

Puri has, however, regretted making these remarks and said the choice of words was inappropriate.

The actor said he should have used appropriate language for description of the political class.

Bedi also has said that her action on Friday mocking the MPs went against her grain but she did not mean to hurt anybody.

Md Adeeb said Bedi had attacked the MPs on three consecutive days from August 24.

He said lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan had told a news channel that "bills are passed in Parliament by taking bribe."

Kiran Bedi has also ridiculed MPs, he said, adding, "this is contempt of Parliament."

Khan, who was in the Chair, assured the members that he would convey the sense of the House to the Chairman.

Taking strong objection to Bedi calling politicians "illiterate", Yadav said such statements erode the dignity of Parliament.

"More than 80 per cent members in this House are graduates and those who are not educated are also more competent than many educated ones," he said citing examples.

Echoing similar views, Shivanand Tewari (JD-U) reminded civil rights activists including Bhushan saying that the person (Anna Hazare) whom they accepted their leader was also a truck driver.

This only showed that the uneducated have more understanding than the educated ones. Taking a dig at some ministers without naming them, he said it were the educated ones who misled the government on handling of the Lokpal issue.

I assume Team Anna is prepared for the fact that the state will hit back and they have their defenses in place. Obviously, our political class continues to think of itself as "neo royalty" and hence needing to be treated with deference, and servility - V*VIPs afterall. Like beggars they want us to approach them - and if they feel charitable at that time they will throw some crumbs for us.

I didn't see what Om Puri said but I thought Kiran Bedi's was quite theartical matching with the time and place.

And what happens when MPs dont behave like MPs. Can the Speaker and Vice President tell us what happened to the MPs in the following cases:

a) Bofors Scam.

b) 2G Scam.

c) CWG Scam where a CM is also involved.

d) ADARSH Scam where two MPs are ministers too.

e) Cash for Votes Scam.

e) Fodder Scam..where the MP was also Rly Minister.

Can just go on and on....But please tell us Madam Speaker and Sir Vice President what action you took.

Mr Om Puri spoke the truth. Face the reality of a New India

Only thing this privilege motion proves is that the parliament is impossibly intolerant.
I hope there is no privilege motion against me for saying this.

the person (Anna Hazare) whom they accepted their leader was also a truck driver."

Seems Truck driver has no privilege ?

One Tiwari abused Anna and second Tiwari degrades Anna's role as an Army Truck driver By the way Anna is a Army man who was decorated for the 1965 War he fought fought . It is insult to Indian Soldiers .

Can we blame OmPuri under the circumstances ?

AUG 29, 2011 05:39 PM

How dare Puri dub the "thieves" "incompetent" ?

AUG 29, 2011 05:52 PM

If calling MPs incompetent amlunt to breach of privelage, would calling them competent not amount to outright lying?

I cannot understand how the sanctity and dignity of our highest democratic institution- the Parliament can be saved if everybody tries to sling stones at it! We are angry but we shall not become indecent and licentious and destroy our democratic institution. At present there is no other better system of government, other than democracy../bsc

Om Puri spoke the truth...why did he retract? That was stupid! Though statistics may be reeled out stating 80% are graduates the entire Congress contingent is equivalent to illiterate for the fact that any educated person would have self respect and can think on his own which our Congress idiots cannot do. Educated people recognize looting the country is a crime and so 50% is a conservative estimate it should actually be 75%+!
