Press Trust of India / Rajkot September 23, 2012, 20:45
Three Dalit youths were killed in police firing at Thangadh town near here following clashes with members from another community, police said today.
The trouble between Dalits and the Bharwad (Shepherd) community members started at the Tarnetar fair held near Thangadh in Surendranagar district which concluded yesterday, police said.
The members of the two communities reportedly clashed over some issue after the fair.
The police first resorted to lathicharge and then fired tear gas shells, they said. When the violence continued, police fired in the air in which a Dalit boy was killed while two others were seriously injured.
They succumbed today, police said.
"To quell the mob, police first resorted to lathicharge, then fired tear gas shells, but as violence continued and stone throwing started, we had to fire in air," a police official said.
Meanwhile, clashes between the two groups flared up again this afternoon, police said, adding, security has been stepped up in the area.

Dalit kills self after daughter is 'gangraped'

For the last four days, a Dalit mother and her teenage daughter have been camping outside Hisar's civil hospital, where the body of the older woman's husband lies in the mortuary. Groups from their village have been taking out protest rallies and candlelight marches, demanding justice for them.
Earlier this month, the daughter, who is 16, was allegedly gangraped by eight men from their village Dabra outside Hisar.
She kept it secret for 10 days. But when the father finally got to know, he preferred to kill himself rather than bear the terrible humiliation, the mother said.
Dabra is sharply divided between Dalits and upper caste Jats. All the alleged rapists are Jats. The men allegedly filmed the gangrape on mobile phones, and a video clip is apparently in circulation in Hisar. The police declined to confirm this.
The family has refused to take the body until the alleged rapists are arrested.
Hisar superintendent of police Satheesh P Balan said, "A youth has been taken into custody. We expect the family will take away the body tomorrow."
The 16-year-old schoolgirl was abducted on September 9. "A car approached from behind me. Mahender and Rajkumar, two of the eight youths inside the vehicle, got off and pushed me inside. They took me to a field on Tosham Road. Four other youths were waiting there. Eight of them took turns to rape me for about three hours, and four recorded it on mobile phones," she told The Sunday Express.
"The men are known goondas. I recognized four of them; one is the nephew of a politician," she said.
When the girl stopped eating, her mother, a former schoolteacher who gave up her job to bring up her two children, found out what had happened.
"My daughter told me on September 18," the mother said. "I informed my husband, who asked me to go with our daughter to my parents' home. He then consumed poison."
"In villages, such things can't be kept secret. By the time we got to know, everyone was talking about my daughter's rape," she said.
The father was a gardener who made around Rs 20,000 every month, a lot of which was spent on their children's education. The victim's brother studies at ITI, Hisar; she has always wanted to be a doctor. The family lives in a kuchcha one-room dwelling in the Dalit part of the village.

Haryana: Dalit girl gangraped, accused circulate MMS; 1 held after protests

Hisar: A 16-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly gangraped by eight "upper caste" men on September 9 in the Dabra area of Hisar. The case came to light only 10 days later, on September 19, after the distraught minor broke down in front of her parents and narrated the incident.
To make matters worse, when the girl's father approached the police for help, they reportedly refused to file an FIR. The helpless father committed suicide the next day.
The police have now arrested one of the accused after the residents of the area refused to cremate the body until arrests were made.
The accused reportedly made an MMS clip of the incident and circulated it.
The girl's uncle told reporters, "The girl was scared and did not report the incident to her family. The accused had threatened to kill her if she approached the police. But when the MMS clip was circulated in the entire village and the people came to know, her father decided to report the matter to the police. However, I don't know what happened. He took the extreme step the next day."
Meanwhile, Hisar SP Satish Balan said, "A man committed suicide after her daughter was gangraped. But, no case was registered regarding her rape."

Kakinada Sree Peetham seer Paripoornananda Saraswathi has demanded the endowments department to establish a professional college and hospital in every district to provide free education as well as treatment to Hindus.
Kakinada Sree Peetham seer Paripoornananda Saraswathi has demanded the endowments department to establish a professional college and hospital in every district to provide free education as well as treatment to Hindus.
He advised the department to use the revenue of A and B category temples to setup colleges and hospitals. He maintained that the revenue of temples was used for society development right from ancient times and stressed the need to continue it. He reminded that the trustees of Sri Ananta Padmanabha Swamy Temple in Trivandrum refused to touch the hidden treasure under the plea that it is public property.
He suggested the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) to take the initiative to set up educational institutes while referring to crores of rupees being spent by the organisation to spread Hindu culture through Dharma Prachara Parishat.
Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, the seer pointed to an engineering college being run by Srikalahastiswara Swamy temple at Srikalahasti while suggesting endowment wing to follow the model and set up colleges and hospitals in every district.
Referring to Dalita Govindam programme of TTD, he suggested the devasthanam to arrange free darshan to Dalits across the state to nurture Hindu culture among them and prevent them from migrating to other religions.
"TTD should arrange two buses from each district to pick up Dalits from their colonies once in a week and drop them back after darshan. They should also post SC, ST, BC's, who have been trained to perform puja by TTD, in the temples in SC/ST colonies wherever priests are not available. Dharma Pracharaks should be posted in all the 1,120 mandals in the state to create awareness among people living in rural areas on Hindu culture. The Pracharaks should encourage mass participation in traditional festivals to bring unity among the villagers" the seer asserted.
Sri Paripoornananda Swamy expressed concern over granting permission for slaughterhouses and allowing slaughter of cows despite ban. He said that cow slaughter is responsible for farmers' suicides as well as all bad things happening in the state. He attributed the prosperity and all-round growth in Gujarat to strict ban on cow-slaughter.

Ambedkar had lobbied for cabinet post: Book
Vikas Pathak, Hindustan Times, New Delhi, September 19, 2012
Bharatiya Janta Party's Dalit leader and former Union minister Sanjay Paswan has said that Dalit icon Dr BR Ambedkar had requested Congress' Dalit face Jagjivan Ram to lobby Mahatma Gandhi to provide a cabinet berth to Ambedkar.
The claim is politically explosive as Ambedkariite Dalit politics in India opposes Gandhi and celebrates Ambedkar as a votary of autonomous Dalit politics that was deeply critical of Gandhi and the Congress Party.
Ambedkar asked Jagjivan Ram whether he did not deserve a cabinet berth in independent India, Paswan writes in his biography on Jagjivan Ram which was released on Tuesday.
When Jagjivan Ram said he was most-deserving, Ambedkar said: "Please recommend my name to Gandhiji."
Paswan adds that Jagjivan Ram met Sardar Patel to consult him and then made a formal request to Gandhi. Gandhi, Paswan writes, assured him he would talk to Nehru.
He did so, and Ambedkar became a minister in the first government of independent India. Paswan says Jagjivan Ram was in two minds, as Ambedkar was asking him to recommend his name to Gandhi, whom Ambedkar himself had publicly attacked.
Politically, the book marks an attempt to uphold "inclusive" Dalit politics of joining mainstream parties rather than charting an autonomous route, like that of the BSP today. This, in turn, is an attempt to win Dalits for the BJP's cause.
RSS leader Indresh Kumar, who was named in an NIA chargesheet on the Ajmer blast, has written the preface of the book, which was released by BJP president Nitin Gadkari.
"People of India wanted to see Babuji as Prime Minister. They also wanted Bharat Ratna for Babuji. Those in power today can no longer give him the former honour but can still bestow him with the latter," Kumar writes in the preface.
This is an oblique attack on the Congress for having given Jagjivan Ram a raw deal by not making him a Prime Minister.
