From The Hindu:
Left parties on Friday underscored that it is for the people of Libya to decide the type of government and political system in their country and they cannot be imposed by use of force.
Reacting to the claim by the West that the killing of the former Libyan strongman, Muammar Qadhafi, has ended a despotic rule, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau said it was sheer hypocrisy, as it was the U.S. and its allies which propped up the most despotic regimes.''
The main aim of the U.S.-NATO interference in Libya was fulfilled with the killing of Qadhafi. The blatant aggression was to effect a regime change, though it was proclaimed as an intervention to save the people and establish democracy, the Polit Bureau said in a statement.
Communist Party of India national secretary D. Raja said observed that imperialist powers were attempting to capture the massive oil resources in Libya, rather than help the political and democratic process.
It is sad to see how Qadhafi met his tragic end. He was once a fighter against imperialist powers. He and other rulers in West Asia should have unleashed political reforms at an appropriate time to meet the legitimate aspirations of the people, for democracy and to ensure their participation in the political process by giving powers to the people. Instead leaders like Qadhafi continued with their dynastic rule,' leading to protests by people, he said.
Quest for oil
In a statement, CPI-ML (Liberation) blamed NATO-backed fighters for Qadhafi's killing. It was ironic that such a blatant war crime is being welcomed by the imperialist U.S. and its allies,'' it said adding that the U.S.-NATO aggression was yet another instance when the imperialist quest for oil and strategic dominance was being projected as support for democratic regime-change.
