Our National Shame :Empty Stomachs and Overflowing Godowns

Press Conference on Starvation Deaths and the Forth-Coming National Food (In)Security Bill

Dear Sir/Madam,

Empty stomachs epitomise the  situation of hunger in our country. In West Bengal, we have the added problems of a new Government unable to stem the continuing rot in the Public Distribution System (PDS). In such a situation, the National Food Security Bill 2011, which has been planned as the new show piece of the UPA II Government for the winter session of Parliament, seems more of a  food "insecurity" Bill, with little potential to deal with the problems of hunger and malnutrition.

Mass organizations, trade unions and NGOs have been creating public awareness on this issue and have been struggling for food entitlements for the hungry as part of a National Campaign. Right To Food Campaign State Committees in Bihar, Chattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Orissa have decided to organize an Eastern Region Campaign from 2ndOctober to 16th October 2012. The ABHIJAN will be concluded with a mass gathering from the five eastern states at Jamshedpur SATNAM MAIDAN on 16th October.

Right to Food and Work Campaign-West Bengal along with other participants is organizing a Press Conference on 29.09.12 at 1p.m. at Kolkata Press Club to provide information on the present state of hunger and starvation in the state and provide a critique of the National Food Security Bill

The Press Conference will be addressed by the participants from various districts, victims of mal-development from Birbhum and union leaders from Jalpaiguri and from closed jute mills where hunger and starvation deaths are a regular feature, and people who have experiences as members of Government-formed  vigilance committees  .

You are requested to send a photographer and reporter to cover the Occasion.

Thanking you,

Yours sincerely
