PRESS RELEASE                                                         Dated 13.7.2011 A hotel owner beats to death a child worker and injures another in Madhya Pradesh: NHRC takes suo motu cognizance   The National Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report alleging that one child labourer died while another suffered injuries due to beating by a hotel owner in Shivpur, District Chindwara, Madhya Pradesh. The Commission while issuing a notice to the Chief Secretary, Government of Madhya Pradesh calling for a report in the matter within four weeks has also directed him to inform as to what action has  been taken by the State Government against the owner of the hotel under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986 besides initiating criminal action and what relief is proposed to be given to the victims.    According to the media report carried on the 9th July, 2011, Mahesh, aged 13 years and Sonu, aged 14 years had been working in a hotel at Shivpur main road owned by Gulla @ Ramesh. On Wednesday at about 11.30 P.M. he called them to his hotel from their house and accused them of stealing Rs.1,000/-.  Thereafter, he beat both of them with a lathi resulting in the death of Mahesh on the spot, while Sonu suffered injuries in one of his legs. It was also reported that the police, after registering a case of murder, had started investigation in the matter.
