Death Sneaks In Again As Curfew Strangles Kashmir

Srinagar, Sep 16, KONS:  Unremitting curfew continued its stranglehold over entire Kashmir for the fifth consecutive day on Thursday, with countless urban families facing grave shortages in essentials as authorities enforced a punishing regime of restrictions even as firing by government forces claimed another young life with a Maisuma youth injured last month succumbing in a Delhi hospital.
With streets taken over by the police and paramilitary troopers who block virtually every lane and by-lane, the capital city of Kashmir and outlying towns resemble a military siege with millions confined indoors against their will.
The valley-wide curfew clamped this Sunday amid a paroxysm of violence that had left 18 persons dead in a matter of hours continued unbroken with absolutely no respite to a population held captive for the better part of the week.
The government has been battling a massive upsurge since mid June when the killing of three villagers in a fake encounter in the frontier Kupwara district came to light and a city teenager was killed by the police in old Srinagar, triggering off unrelenting protests, controlling which over 85 Kashmiris have been killed so far by the police and the paramilitary forces.
Kashmiris had begun to adapt to a routine of government curfews and separatist shutdowns, punctuated as they were with brief interludes of respite, but the present spell of restrictions by the authorities has been total and absolute, with no exceptions being made even of pharmacies which usually were kept exempt from the curbs.
The unexpected severity of the curfew has left Kashmiris gasping for some relief, particularly in the urban areas where the police and the paramilitary forces have curtailed civilian movement to the extent that even funerals go unattended except for a hurried burial with only a handful of people present.
Visiting the bereaved families for condolence is out of the question, marriage ceremonies have been cancelled, and even newspapers , which the government had assured would not be hampered, have been put out of circulation.
FIRING IN SOPORE
Angry crowds poured out into the streets this evening after government forces opened fire in the northern town to leave eight persons injured.
Reports from the town were not clear on why the forces had opened fire, but there had been been several incidents of severe stone-pelting on the police and the paramilitary troopers deployed in the streets earlier in the day.
Five of today's victims have referred to Srinagar hospitals for treatment because of their critical injuries.
Large protests had also broken out in the Pattu Khah area of the town at around noon after the police and the paramilitary personnel beat up a scooterist  severely.
VIOLENCE IN BEMINA
The Bemina area of upper Srinagar witnessed violence yet again today despite strict curfew as protesting groups of youth took to the streets to decry killings by the government forces.
As street battles raged in various localities, a speeding CRPF vehicle overturned on the middle of the road as its driver lost control on running into a furious barrage of stones by protestors.
Several paramilitary personnel were injured in the incident.

In fact, Idara is running short of funds. There has been negligible
donations pouring in due to civil disturbance in Kashmir for the last
four months . On the other hand, the number of destitute have
increased substantially. We are passing through  difficult situation
and pray to Allah for  success. Insha-Allah! we are and shall continue
to carry on the noble mission with the help of Allah. You may
hopefully guide us at this juncture.
