An Invitation On The Fifth Anniversary of Nandigram's Operation Nutan
Surjauday

In November 2007, terror was once again unleashed in Nandigram.
Through Operation Nutan Surjauday(Operation New Dawn), the CPI(M) sent
its armed goons to "recapture" Nandigram, leading to huge numbers of
people fleeing their homes, many wounded and missing, some dead,
burning of houses and huge suffering. It was a war by a powerful party
on unarmed people. These events , full of cruelty and injustice,
evoked an equally strong reaction from citizens of the state. One such
reaction resulted in a unique experiment in Kolkata, where the
Nandigram Manch for 46 days occupied the heart of Kolkata in a dharna,
with many conscious citizens, irrespective of their political
differences, collaborated to protest against the injustice in
Nandigram. The dharnasthal at Metro channel became a centre for
mobilising support for the people of Nandigram.

What do the people of Nandigram have to say today , five years after
the event?? How do activists evaluate today the events that took place
five years ago? What has been the impact of those events on life in
Bengal, on the anti-SEZ movement , on the resistance to land
acquisition and the resistance to terror?

On the occasion of thethe fifth anniversary of Operation Nutan
Surjuday, the Nandigram Manch  is to once again raising questions that
are relevant for the people of Nandigram and for all the other
Nandigrams that exist elsewhere. We are organising a programme of
reflection on events in Nandigram, their aftermath and lessons for
today.Besides a discussion amongst various social activists who were
part of those events and are still active, the programme's main
attraction is the release of a documentary film entitled "Surjaudayer
Deshe" (In The Land Of The Dawn) with concept and research by Sukumar
Mitra and Direction by Tushar Bhattacharya.Sukumar Mitra has been a
consistent and dedicated journalist during the most troubled times in
Nandigram, giving an eye witness account about what was happening
there, while Tushar Bhattacharya has many documentaries on
controversial subjects (Morijhapi being one of them) to his credit

We would request your presence to view the film and to participate in
the discussions there.
