Activist seeks ban on housing near dump sites
The Times of India, Ahmedabad, 10-11-2011Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti's Rohit Prajapati has dashed off a letter to the minister alleging that the state government has flouted the guidelines of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) by reducing the stipulated 500 metres distance to be maintained between the sites and residential complexes to 100 metres.
He said that several illegal residential schemes are coming up in the vicinity of industrial hazardous solid waste site of Green Environment Co-operative Society in Vatva, and Naroda Enviro Projects in Naroda.
The decision to reduce the distance to 100 metres was taken in a government meeting held on September 9 as lot of construction had already been completed and people had been allotted houses. After concerns over these sites were raised, GPCB decided to ban the water supply to these residential complexes through bore wells.
