Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Reza Raouf-Sheibani
The Iranian deputy foreign minister has strongly criticized US ambassador's visit to a restive Syrian city as a clear instance of interfering in other countries' internal affairs.
Mohammad Reza Raouf-Sheibani said the move showed Washington's clear meddling in Syria's internal affairs, adding that it was against international diplomatic norms.
His criticism came after US Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford travelled to the restive town of Hama on Thursday to meet with demonstrators without prior arrangements with Syrian officials.
He added that the meddlesome move by the US took place at a time the country is making efforts to form a national dialogue front to ease the unrest.
The Iranian official also warned that the US has been trying to make its intrusive measures appear ordinary and to infringe on the national sovereignty of other countries.
The US State Department had earlier announced that Ford's travel to Hama was made with the intention of showing solidarity with anti-government protesters.
The Syrian government condemned the visit, saying the unauthorized trip was proof that Washington was inciting violence in the Arab nation.
Syria has been experiencing unrest in past months, with demonstrations held both against and in support of the Bashar al-Assad government.
Hundreds have been reported killed when some protest rallies turned into armed clashes between alleged protesters and state security forces as well as organized attacks by well-armed gangs against Syrian police force and border guards in north of the country.
Syrian state TV has broadcast reports and images of seizing cache of weapons and confessions by elements detailing how they obtained arms from foreign sources.
